Each Buckeyes game in Columbus, Ohio is normally a sellout, a tradition that has been a part of Buckeyes lore for decades. Ohio Stadium is located on the campus of Ohio State University, and it is rightly regarded as the mecca of Ohio football on any level, high school, college, or professional.
When the program first began fielding its gridiron unit, the team played its first few seasons at Ohio Field. In 1922, construction of Ohio Stadium was completed. The first game played in the new home location took place on October 7, 1922 against Ohio Wesleyan, and the "Dedication" game was played two weeks later against arch rival Michigan. In its tenure at Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes have, to date, compiled a record of 350-101-20, and it has housed seven national college football champions.
As mentioned, Buckeyes' home game sellouts are the norm, not the exception! From 1951 to 1973, OSU led college football attendance an amazing 21 times! The facility has expanded several times over the years, and the listed capacity for Ohio Stadium today is 101,568. This does not mean more can't watch a game there, for the all time attendance record for a single game was set recently. On November 23, 2002, 105,539 watched the Buckeyes in the season ending contest with the Michigan Wolverines.
As with many major programs, the Buckeyes have made changed to the playing surface, beginning with grass 84 years ago, then switching to artificial turf in 1970. Thankfully, natural turf returned in 1990, and remains to this day.
Finally, to top off just how special a place Ohio Stadium is, it is listed as location in the National Registry of Historical Places!
