Woody Hayes - Former - Go Buckeyes Go
Woody Hayes
Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes - The man all other OSU coaches are measured with.
One of college football's most colorful figures, Woody Hayes served as the Buckeyes Head coach from 1951 to 1978. During that period, his teams amassed a record of 205-68-10. Two times, he was selected College Football Coach of the Year, and he is the only OSU coach to win multiple pigskin championships -
During his tenure Ohio State won thirteen Big 10 titles, competing yearly with arch rivals Bo Schembechler and the Michigan Wolverines. Bowl games appearances became a Buckeyes tradition under coach Hayes, as he led 10 teams to post season bowl games.
While Woody Hayes emphasized team fundamentals and performance, there are some individual points worth noting from his remarkable career -
- A total of 56 players were selected as All Americans from 1951 to 1978
- During his tenure, there were three Heisman Trophy winner at OSU
- Three Outland Trophy recepients
- 2 Lombardi Trophy winners
While his career would fatefully draw to a close with his blow to an opposing player and two Buckeyes players in his last game coached, coach Hayes rightfully received the accolades he deserved from the Ohio State faithful in his retirement years, and the achievements he accomplished will serve as the measuring stick for future OSU head coached. He was honored in 1983 with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, and he passed away at age 74 in March, 1987.
