Head coach Jim Tressel
Fifty-two year old Jim Tressel has reached the upper tier of NCAA 1-A football in one of the shortest times ever needed. In four seasons at Columbus, he has returned Buckeyes football to the forefront of Big 10 play, and under his guidance, the team has won a national championship.
Coach Tressel became the 22nd head coach of the OSU football program on January 18, 2001. He was not a stranger to Buckeyes fans, having previously served as an assistant coach for the team from 1983 to 1985. Prior to OSU, he enjoyed tremendous success as the head coach of 1-AA Youngstown State. In 18 seasons under his guidance, the Penguins posted a 167-64-2 record. YSU appeared in nine 1-AA playoffs, and won four national championships. During that time, Tressel was selected Coach of the Year in division 1-AA four times.
He was a natural choice to succeed John Cooper in Columbus, and in his first season, the Buckeyes registered a 7-5 record. In his tenure at Ohio State, his teams have amassed a record of 32-7, with a 19-5 mark in conference play. The Buckeyes have been to three consecutive bowl games, the second of the three being the National Title game at the Fiesta Bowl in January, 2003.
While this year's team is loaded with younger players in the starting lineups, Jim Tressel' drive and leadership should guide the team to another successful campaign in 2004.
